What Customers Say About Animalia (Picture Puffins):

I don't know. For example, for the letter K: "Kid Kookaburra and Kelly Kangaroo Kidnapping Kitty Koala," and the scene is of two old-time gangster types with machine guns up, snatching a surprised and dignified lady koala. Many of the words are simply WAY over the head of a typical child (e.g. so, the reason for the 3 stars versus 4 or 5 is that I don't think it's wholly appropriate for the age that would typically be reading an "ABC" type book. I DO think this book would be great fun and appropriate for an older child to absorb and study the artwork and also for language development, but I think it's too much for early elementary. Two additional creepy things about this page: that there is a child watching from the window with an interested and content look on her face and a little kitty is happily rubbing up against the leg of one of the hostage takers.

vociferous, basking, diabolical, ingenious, jovial, etc). I will agree with all the other reviews that this is a beautiful, thoughtful book to look at, the illustrations are magnificent, the little concepts on each page are funny and sometimes silly and often nonsensical, and I enjoyed it greatly. The images can be quite intense and the language as well. I just felt it was a little too much for a 4-5 year old.

Animalia is not just an alphabet book, but it's entertainment and learning for children of all ages. I've given this book to friends that will be soon-to-be parents, and they all are in awe once they open the book. What makes this author so unique is his amazing eye for detail. It stretches the normal adult vocabulary for synonims, but there are enough common childhood items for the youngsters to appreciate.

Frankly, I think these scenes are not worrisome at all, but others may disagree. - item. There's two ways to do an alphabet book. The first is to have each letter firmly illustrated by one - and only one. The second, which is the approach taken in this book, is to have as many items as possible crammed onto each page. The result is an alphabet book that grows with your kid, because even a grown-up can spend a lot of time quietly poring over the pages of the book to catch one last detail, find one more F word, locate the boy in the striped shirt on every page. There are a few pages that seemingly indicate violence - hogs going into battle, a kangaroo in a kidnapping, warrior wasps - so parents of more sensitive children will want to read this book before purchasing.

All ages will love it. Animalia is amazing. This book will become your child's favorite book and your favorite gift to give a child. The illustrations are beautiful, the letters help with learning the alphabet, the "hunt" becomes a wonderful game, and as the child grows, s/he will find more hidden words.
